University of Worcester
Post Doctoral Researcher
Ref: ISE1401 – 1464
Institute of Science and the Environment: National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit (NPARU)
Salary: £30,727- £34,564 a year
Full time, temporary for 18 Months to start as soon as possible after 1st February 2014
Responsible to: Senior Lecturer (Atmospheric Science)
This post offers an opportunity to be involved with the expansion and development of the National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit (NPARU). NPARU is a designated Research Centre of the University of Worcester (UW) involved with Health, Science, Environment and Forensics. NPARU is part of the Institute of Science and Environment at which is currently responsible for a wide range of courses including degrees in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Forensic and Applied Biology, Environmental Sciences, Physical and Human Geography, and Archaeology & Heritage Studies. NPARU primarily conducts research and consultancy on topics related to allergens and infectious agents. However research themes include Atmospheric Science (including pollutants and organic matter in the air), health and clinical trials, pollen forecasts for the UK media and Met Office, respiratory allergies, forensic palynology, diagnostics systems for crop protection, host pathogen interactions and allergen reduction testing. NPARU is unique in the UK and has earned a national and international reputation for its combination of expertise in allergens, aerobiology, indoor air quality and medical knowledge.
NPARU has developed collaborative links with many organisations, institutions and companies in the UK and abroad and has a highly successful track record of research and commercial enterprise, including many interdisciplinary projects. The unit also contributes to undergraduate teaching at the UW and has attracted joint funding to support (with UW) 8 PhD students during the last 5 years. Sponsors have included the European Union, Dyson Ltd, British Council, German Weather Service and Surveillance Data Inc., USA, Leverhulme Trust and the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board. The unit has recently undergone a major £7 million expansion. The ground floor of this is a purpose built extension for research activities and will provide leading-edge technologies including a climate-controlled room capable of testing products and the effects of illnesses such as asthma in different environmental conditions.
The University of Worcester is expanding its activities on atmospheric science in relation to allergenic pollen, fungal spores and air quality. The expansion includes support to the existing group in atmospheric science to provide an integrated research methodology on topics in relation to bioaerosols and air quality. This support includes an expansion into spatial modeling by acquiring hardware and attracting experienced staff with solid research experience. The university now seeks a post doc that has experience with atmospheric modeling and a scientific interest on climate driven emissions and bioaerosols. The post doc is expected to contribute to the development of a model suite that is based on the WRF/WRF-Chem model, Lagrangian models (HYSPLIT/STILT), local scale models and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
JOB PURPOSE:
1. To support the Atmospheric Science team leader, by using and further developing existing atmospheric models in relation to climate driven emissions and bioaerosols.
2. To integrate atmospheric models input/output with GIS systems and NCL.
3. To attend and present research findings and papers at academic and professional conferences and to contribute to the external visibility of the project.
4. To engage across the range of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, administration and other activities supporting the research capacity of the Department.
5. To assist in the development of new sample processing techniques for plant pathogens for use within antibody and molecular diagnostics.
Closing date: 13 February 2014.
