Postdoc Position in
Biochemistry & Genome Stability
#HUPD01

The Institute of Molecular Biology gGmbH (IMB) is a Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences, funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation, located within the campus of the Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany.

Applications are invited for an ERC-funded post-doctoral position in the lab of Prof. Helle Ulrich (www.imb.de/ulrich). The group employs techniques in yeast genetics, molecular and cell biology and protein biochemistry to study the contributions of the posttranslational modifiers, ubiquitin and SUMO, to DNA repair and genome stability in general. An important aspect of the research is the in vitro reconstitution of ubiquitylation and sumoylation reactions as well as DNA polymerase activity using purified components.

Project
The aim of the project is to explore how the function of PCNA as an interaction platform at the replication fork is coordinated and modulated by ubiquitylation and sumoylation. The successful applicant will investigate how PCNA orchestrates the transition between DNA replication and damage processing and analyze the implications for mutagenesis and replication fidelity. The project will involve the production, purification and analysis of ubiquitin and SUMO conjugation factors and DNA replication and repair proteins as well as the establishment of new tools for the analysis of protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions, ubiquitylation, sumoylation and DNA replication.

Required Qualifications
• A PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology or related areas
• Excellent skills and experience in protein purification and protein biochemistry
• Preferably: experience with yeast- and/or baculovirus-based expression systems
• A good general background in molecular biology
• First author peer-reviewed publications out, in press or submitted
• Good communication skills in English and good interpersonal skills

We offer
• An international and collaborative working environment (working language: English)
• Access to excellent core facilities
• Advanced training opportunities
• Competitive salary
• Favourable pension scheme

Starting date: 1 April 2014 or later Duration: Initially 2 years; option of further extension

To apply please send a single PDF file containing your cover letter stating research and career interests, CV, scans of your degrees (Germans: including copies of Abitur- & Diplom/Master Zeugnis), and contact details of 2 references to personnel@imb-mainz.de. Please state job reference #HUPD01. Informal enquiries should be addressed to Prof. Helle Ulrich (h.ulrich@imb-mainz.de).

Closing date: 31 March 2014
