Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Harvard University - Cambridge, MA
The HLS Program on the Legal Profession (PLP) is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to begin in the fall of 2014 to conduct independent empirical research on the structure, norms, and dynamics of the legal profession and to contribute to the evolving research priorities of the Program. While open to applicants pursing research on any aspect of the legal profession, PLP is particularly interested in those whose research touches on how to measure quality in the delivery of legal services, questions of diversity, gender, and mentorship in the profession, and debates concerning legal education in a domestic context. The Postdoctoral Fellow will join a forward-thinking research community at the Program, including a Faculty Director, Research Director, Executive Director, other Postdoctoral Fellows, and program support staff.Harvard University - Cambridge, MA
While in full-time residence at HLS and within PLP offices, the Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to purse his/her own research agenda on the legal profession as described in his/her statement of interest and in on-going consultation with the PLP Faculty Director, Research Director, Executive Director and research staff. It is expected that the Postdoctoral Fellow will actively seek to publish his/her work in academic journals and other scholarly publications and, where possible, contribute to bridging the academic-practitioner divide.
The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to contribute to the intellectual community of PLP through substantial engagement with other PLP residential fellows, PLP affiliated faculty and fellows, and the wider HLS/Harvard academic community. The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to participate in PLP-run research workshops, roundtables, and other academic discussions as well as assist in editing PLP’s working paper series.
In on-going consultation with the PLP Faculty Director, Research Director, Executive Director and research staff, the Postdoctoral Fellow is also expected to participate in and contribute to the programmatic research initiatives of the Program. This includes working on PLP initiated and directed research, assisting in the convening of academic conferences, and contributing to the overall academic vibrancy of the Program. To that end, the Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to write and collaborate on PLP sponsored scholarly papers, research reports, white papers, newsletters/blogs and conference materials.
The ideal Postdoctoral Fellow will be able to work independently in designing and conducting his/her own research as well as function as part of PLP’s wider team-based research and programmatic agendas. This may include work with PLP leadership to secure research specific funding.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to work sensitively with confidential information, maintain research compliance, and preserve documents, data, and research materials in organized physical and electronic file systems in accordance with Harvard guidelines.
