Microbial communities comprise the dominant life form on earth and major drivers of global geochemical processes, yet remain poorly understood. Improving our understanding of microbial communities is essential to developing bioremediation strategies. As part of large multidisciplinary research program at LBL we seek to define the principles of selection of microbial community function, composition, bioenergetics, and physiology.Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory - Berkeley, CA
This role will play an important part in developing and applying metabolite profiling and imaging to resolve trophic interactions, signaling, and localization of metabolism within microbial communities.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and apply innovative mass spectrometry based imaging and metabolite profiling approaches to study microbial communities
- High productivity on large complex research project
- Analyze and integrate results
- Publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at seminars and conferences.
- Collaborate with other members of the program project research team both internal and external to Berkeley Lab and develop new collaborations as appropriate to further the scientific goals of the Program
- PhD within the last three years in chemical engineering, bioengineering, chemistry, biochemistry, chemical biology, environmental microbiology or related field
- DEMONSTRATED STRENGTH IN MASS SPECTROMETRY BASED METABOLOMICS AND/OR IMAGING
- Proven ability to perform independent research and organize data for publication and presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with technical and scientific staff.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Demonstrated ingenuity in dealing with complex problems.

Demonstrated strength and efficiency in technical writing.
Additional desired qualifications: - LC/MS/MS LIPIDOMIC EXPERIENCE
- Experience analyzing EPS materials using mass spectrometry
- Experience in comparative genomics and sequence analysis
- Experience in culturing microorganisms or environmental microbiology
- Strong track record in developing innovative experimental approaches
