Postdoctoral Associate-Electrophysiology
Broad Institute - Cambridge, MA
The aim of the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research is to reveal the genetic, molecular, cellular and circuitry underpinnings of psychiatric disorders. Within the last year, the Stanley Center and the psychiatric genetics community have been very successful in providing unprecedented insights into the genetic causes of these debilitating disorders. Now, the difficulty lies in how to translate the genetic findings into neurobiological mechanisms, which are essential for the identification of drug targets and eventually the development of novel effective treatments.

The candidate will work directly with an electrophysiology group in the Model Systems and Neurobiology Program at Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research. He/she will develop and implement electrophysiological methods, including in vitro, ex vivo and/or in vivo electrophysiological analyses, aiming to characterize in depth the function of candidate risk genes associated with psychiatric disorders and the consequences of mutations of these genes at synaptic and circuitry level. The candidates are expected to perform extensive whole cell patch-clamp recordings in cultured neurons and acute brain slices. Experience with single, multi-electrodes in vivo recording, and/or optogenetic approaches in living mice is an advantage. The successful candidate will be also responsible for communicating results to the scientific community through conference presentations and publications.

Requirements:
PhD in biology, neurobiology, neuroscience, molecular, chemical or cell biology. PhD in neuroscience with solid training in in vitro and ex vivo electrophysiology preferred. Demonstrated technical proficiency in whole-cell patch clamp recordings in both cultured cells and acute brain slices. Proven record of significant contributions to research projects as individual contributor and as a collaborator. Must have outstanding personal initiative and communication skills, and be able to work well in a team.
