Cryoelectron Microscopy Postdoctoral Fellow
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory - Berkeley, CA
The Molecular Foundry at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory invites applications for multiple postdoctoral positions in the Ren Group. The projects, supported by National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, will be studying the mechanism and dynamics of proteins that relate to human cholesterol metabolism.
The approach will be mainly focused on using our in-house developed individual-particle electron tomography (IPET, Zhang, et. al., 2012, 7(1): 30249 ) and cryo-positive-staining (cryoPS, Nature Chemical Biology, 2012, 8(4): 342-349). Research involved in sample preparation, TEM operation, and image process, computer programing and molecular dynamic simulation.

The Ren Group lab is located in the imaging facility of the Molecular Foundry. The imaging facility is fully equipped with various imaging instruments, such as electron microscopes (Zeiss LIBRA 120 Plus Cryo-TEM and JEOL 2100F 200 kV FEG TEM), atomic force microscopes, Ramon spectrum and near-field light microscopes. Additional TEMs available to us are housed at the National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM) ,adjacent to the Molecular Foundry.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. within three years in Physics, Materials Sciences, Structural Biology or Biochemistry or related field
  • Experience in cryo-EM, crystallography, biochemistry or computer science is preferred.
  • Proficiency in logic, mathematics and computer knowledge
  • Internal motivation and enthusiasm in life science is essential.
This post may be ideal for someone who has gained a PhD in physics related science but wants to transfer to the field of life science.

Note: This is a 1-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal up to 3 years based upon satisfactory job performance, continued funding and research need. Background checks are required for all hires.

About Us
The Molecular Foundry at Berkeley Lab is a user facility for the design, synthesis and characterization of materials with nanometer dimensions. One of five such Nanoscale Science Research Centers recently established by the U.S. Department of Energy, its charter defines two primary missions: a) conduct outstanding research across the breadth of nanoscience; and b) collaborate with scientists from around the world who visit to use its state-of-the-art instruments, techniques and expertise to further their own nanoscience research efforts. [See http://foundry.lbl.gov/ ] These positions are associated with the research mission of the Molecular Foundry.

Berkeley Lab addresses the world’s most urgent scientific challenges by advancing sustainable energy, protecting human health, creating new materials, and revealing the origin and fate of the universe. Founded in 1931, Berkeley Lab’s scientific expertise has been recognized with 13 Nobel prizes. The University of California manages Berkeley Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.
