A 2-year Experienced Researcher (ER) position (postdoc position) is available in the Marie Curie Initial Training Network NEPTUNE (http://neptune-itn.eu/). The network combines 8 leading European laboratories with complementary expertise in evolutionary developmental biology, bioinformatics, functional neurobiology, and paleontology and the industrial partners Sigma-Aldrich and Carl Zeiss Microimaging, specialized in genetic manipulation technologies and advanced microscopy. The fellow will be located at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen and will work under the supervision of Gáspár Jékely (Group leader, Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology) in close collaboration with all research and industrial partners. The ER will be exposed to both industrial research & development and basic research environment, obtaining a unique set of skills and qualifications for both worlds.
Description
The aim of the project is to develop, improve and validate methods for targeted mutagenesis, to generate loss-of-function (knock-out) animals, to obtain site-directed integration (knock-in) of expression constructs for improved transgenesis, and also to explore knock-down approaches (siRNAs, morpholinos). The project will focus on the application of these technologies on a range of marine animal models, such as the annelid Platynereis, the crustacean Parhyale, or the jellyfish Clytia. Focus will be on the comparison of efficiency of different techniques in different systems. The ER will work in close collaboration with other Neptune fellows to find tailored solutions for each animal model. Sigma-Aldrich is a leading Life Science and High Technology company whose biochemical, organic chemical products, kits and services are used worldwide in scientific research. The Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology is a world-renowned research institute of the German Max Planck Society with world-class expertise in Cell and Developmental Biology, Evolutionary Biology, and Bioinformatics. The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply. The Max Planck Society is committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them to apply. Written applications, in English, should include a C.V., summary of work experience, a one-page letter describing your scientific interests and your motivation to apply for the position, and contact information for two references. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Profile The candidate should hold a PhD degree and have a sound knowledge and experience in molecular genetics. Previous work on genetic animal models and knockout-technologies is desirable. Fluent English both in spoken and written form is required. Candidates should have a minimum of 4 years and a maximum of 5 years of research experience (full-time equivalent), being ideally at his/her first postdoctoral experience. According to mobility Marie Curie rules, the candidate can be of any nationality but should not have lived and worked in the hosting country (Germany) for more than 12 months in the past 3 years.Benefits
The Neptune network offers attractive working conditions in the framework of the Marie Curie programme, together with the possibility of being part of an international consortium including top-class evo-devo scientists. It also offers a wide range of training opportunities for the fellows that will enjoy summer schools, graduate schools and specialised scientific and soft skills training. The selected candidate will visit several laboratories of the network and co-organise a course on knock-out technologies.
