A postdoctoral research opportunity is available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Grazinglands Research Laboratory in El Reno, OK. The selected applicant will quantify soil C, N, and water fluxes, including soil nitrous dioxide emissions from beef cattle grazing systems composed of native prairie, improved grasslands, and winter wheat. The research contributes to the Grazing CAP regional collaborative objective to better understand vulnerability and enhance resilience of beef-grazing systems through diversified forages, improved management, strategic drought planning, and improved decision support systems for evaluation of alternative options to safeguard and strengthen production and ecosystem services while mitigating GHG emissions.

To be eligible, applicants must have received a doctorate degree in Ecology/Soils or a closely related field with an emphasis in carbon and nitrogen cycling, soil biology and ecology. Doctorate degree must have been received within five years of the desires starting date. Knowledge or experience in soil nitrous oxide emissions and nutrient cycling is required.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Skill in use of static soil chambers and knowledge of GraceNet or similar agroecological protocols
• Laboratory analytical skills, including gas chromotography
• Knowledge of soil, agroecological, and greenhouse gas models
• Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals

Participation in Grazing CAP team planning activities is essential and will offer opportunities to network and collaborate with an outstanding group of researchers, students, and Extension specialists. The Grazinglands Research Laboratory is also the host to the Southern Plains Long Term Agro-ecosystem Research (LTAR) and the Southern Plains Regional Climate Hub.

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with ARS, this position requires a pre-employment check and a full background investigation.

This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) and foreign nationals.

This is an equal opportunity program open to all qualified individuals without regard to race, color, age, sex, religion, national origin, mental or physical disability, genetic information, sexual orientation, or covered veteran’s status.

A stipend supplement is provided to cover the cost of an individual or family health insurance plan. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health insurance may be obtained through ORISE. Relocation expenses up to $4,000 will be reimbursed, with prior approval. The participant does not become an employee of the ARS or ORISE.
