Sandia National Laboratories is the nation's premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation with major facilities in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Livermore, California. We are a world-class team of scientists, engineers, technologists, post docs, and visiting researchers all focused on cutting-edge technology, ranging from homeland defense, global security, biotechnology, and environmental preservation to energy and combustion research, computer security, and nuclear defense. To learn more, please visit our website at www.sandia.gov.
Sandia National Laboratories is searching for a Postdoctoral Appointee to join the Biosystems Research and Development Department team located in sunny Livermore, California. This is a temporary appointment, working a full-time schedule.
Department Description
Biosystems Research & Development Department, located in Livermore, California, performs biological and bioengineering research with applications in national security, healthcare and alternative energy. We are an interdisciplinary research group with a focus on both basic and applied biological research. Our goal is to address problems with strong ties to national security, such as biodefense and health security, through advanced technology development and new research approaches. For example, we are one of the world-leaders in application of microfluidic technology for biochemical analysis. The department is highly multidisciplinary and is comprised of researchers with expertise in many disciplines of biology (molecular biology, microbiology, immunology and biochemistry), chemistry (analytical and physical) and engineering (chemical, mechanical and bioengineering). Currently, we have ongoing projects in the areas of medical diagnostics, therapeutics screening, algal biofuels as well as basic research studies in immunology, cellular signaling, protein structure/function determination, proteomics, computational biology and microfluidics.
Job Summary
We are seeking an outstanding postdoctoral scientist who will study host-pathogen interactions and microbiome dynamics in clinical cases and animal models. The individual will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of biologists, computational biologists, and engineers to develop novel methods and technologies for SGS-based transcriptomic and metagenomic analyses. Bioinformatic analysis of high-throughput datasets will be an essential element of the workflow.
Post Doc Hiring Program
The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management’s discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments.
Required
• A PhD in immunology, microbiology, virology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or a related scientific discipline
• A demonstrated proficiency in standard methods of molecular biology and genomic, metagenomic, or transcriptomic analysis
• A strong publication record
• The ability to conduct creative, independent research
• The ability to work with a diverse, multidisciplinary team to solve complex problems
Desired
• Previous experience with analysis of high-throughput datasets
• Familiarity with SGS technology and applications (e.g., RNA-Seq), especially experience with bioinformatics algorithms, databases, and software tools that are commonly used for analysis of SGS datasets
• Familiarity with statistical analyses, supervised classification, and modeling techniques for interpreting experimental data in light of clinical/animal model metadata.
