Basic Function of the post: The successful candidate will be integral to the success of a collaborative crop biotechnology project focussed on developing the capacity and efficiency of Ensifer-mediated transformation (EMT), a novel gene transfer system which can be used to improve the agronomic performance of major crop species.
The post-doctoral fellow will be specifically involved in expanding the host range of EMT and identifying strategies to improve EMT’s efficacy. They will also play a central role in disseminating to stakeholders the potential of EMT and seeking new collaborations.
Background: Oak Park is the National Centre for Crops Research. The site covers 239ha and all of the primary tillage and energy crops are researched, including; wheat, winter and spring barley, oilseed rape, beans, triticale, camelina, miscanthus, willow and hemp. In addition to an active field-based research programme, Oak Park is also home to state of the art laboratory facilities including dedicated cereal and potato pathology laboratories, a licensed plant transformation laboratory and fully equipped molecular biology laboratories. There is also an equipment suite present for conducting gene expression, 454 sequencing and/or genotyping. Adjacent to the biotechnology building there is a contained glasshouse facility which accommodates the study of novel plant lines developed through transformation.
