Research Associate
The appointment will be full time on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £32,699 – £39,523 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
Applications are invited for a European Union funded Postdoctoral Research Associate in Pathogen sequencing, Bioinformatics and/or Evolutionary biology, based within the Division of Infection and Immunity (Bloomsbury campus, Cruciform Building), headed by Professors Judy Breuer and Hans Stauss, is the focus for research and teaching in infection and immunity. Work within the Division aims to translate advances in the understanding of pathogens and the immune system into improved diagnosis and therapy. It is a project in partnership with two small medium enterprises (Oxford Gene Technologies and CCLBio) and the Erasmus medical Centre in Holland.The postholder will work with other PATHSEEK funded individuals at UCL to analyse next generation sequencing data using bespoke and other bioinformatic tools for diagnostic microbiology and virology. They will also have the opportunity to work on related projects looking at pathogen evolution in relation to antimicrobial /antiviral resistance, transmission and pathogenesis. The Division of Infection and Immunity hosts an MRC Centre for Virology, which provides extensive infrastructure for molecular and cellular virology research. The post is available for 12 months in the first instance.
Applicants should be highly motivated individuals with the ability to contribute and develop research strategies with determination and creativity. The post-holder will have a PhD in a relevant subject and relevant bioinformatics/computational expertise. They will have a proven track record of publishing papers in high impact peer reviewed journals; a good working knowledge of data management and presentation software applications; experience of next generation sequence analysis; familiarity with software for generation multiple sequence alignments; a working knowledge of statistics and statistical package; experience of writing programmes in, for example one or more of the following: Perl and/or Python. Excellent oral and written communication skills. A sound understanding of Health and Safety issues.
