Performance Prediction in Computation Codesign Postdoc
Job IRC35258
The Computer, Computational, and Statistical Sciences (CCS) Division is a vibrant scientific research and development organization working in multiple mission areas of Los Alamos National Laboratory, including energy and climate programs, basic science and technology research programs, computing programs, information science and technology, and the nuclear weapons program. The division is comprised of scientists (85 percent PhD) focused on impactful research and development in fundamental computer science, computational physics, algorithms, high-performance computing, statistics, and applied mathematics. CCS Division bridges the computational sciences that are central to scientific discovery and innovation with external partners and laboratory programs to solve complex and fundamental problems ranging from metagenomics to nuclear energy.

The Information Sciences group (CCS-3) has multiple openings for postdoctoral research associates in the area of codesign for computational physics methods and novel hardware architectures. Selected candidates will participate in a multi-year project to develop a comprehensive performance-prediction capability for next-generation HPC platforms. This will be achieved through the development of scalable discrete-event simulation models for hardware/software components in proposed architectures. For this interdisciplinary project, we are looking for candidates with a strong background in as many of the following areas as possible:

  • (Parallel) Discrete-Event Simulation
  • Computer architectures with a focus on novel concepts used in high-performance platforms (extreme-scale parallelism, GPUs, many-cores, etc.)
  • Concepts used in operating systems and middleware such as MPI, threading, etc
  • Knowledge of computational physics methods and concepts, in particular in the areas of hydrodynamics and radiation transport
  • Advanced programming skills and knowledge of compiler optimization concepts

We offer the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary team.

Education:

  • PhD in related field completed within the past five years or soon to be completed.

    Required Skills and Experience:
  • A PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Computational Physics
  • Research-level expertise in at least one of the following: discrete-event simulation, computer architectures, operating systems and middleware, computational physics
  • Strong programming skills
  • Demonstrated ability to publish research in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings
  • Willingness to work in interdisciplinary project teams and learn about other fields

    Desired Skills:
  • Background or research-level expertise in as many of the following: discrete-event simulation, computer architectures, operating systems and middleware, computational physics
  • Ability to obtain Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship
