英国威尔克姆基金会桑格研究所招聘疟疾研究博士后
Salary range: £30,202 to £37,860 dependent on experience.
Fixed term for 3 years
The Malaria Programme at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is expanding research on vectors. We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to lead our field-based effort to carry out large-scale genetic analyses of vector/parasite interactions. The fellow will be required to coordinate and manage very large-scale collection and rearing of wild mosquito larvae to adults, followed by P. falciparum infection, dissections, and preservation for genome sequencing. The postdoc will have the opportunity to be trained on bioinformatic analyses of the data, and the opportunity to carry out functional testing in the lab on genes of interest. Considerable scope to incorporate microbial genetics into the project exists, and candidates from this background will also be considered. The ideal applicant will be interested and able to spend several months at a time in African countries, and will be extremely organised with the ability to work independently, troubleshoot problems, and plan own work to a high standard, both at Sanger and in the field.
Essential Skills
• Field experience, preferably in Africa, of > 1 month at a time working in remote locations
• PhD in molecular biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, or a related discipline
• Standard molecular biology wet lab experience (DNA /RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR)
• Experience working with insects, preferably mosquitoes
• Detail oriented and highly organized
• Dedicated effort towards meticulous record-keeping (thousands of samples will need to be individually preserved with recorded phenotypes)
• Proven track record of data analysis and publishing high impact papers
Ideal Skills
• Experience working with parasites, preferably malaria
• Experience working with cell culture
• Ability to analyse NGS data
• Experience analysing microbiota data
• Experience working with international collaborators
• Experience of working at Containment Level 2
Other information
Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training
The Genome Campus is a 100-acre estate south of Cambridge in the grounds of Hinxton Hall and is home to the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). The site has become the British hub of biomedical science. The Campus is also home to the Wellcome Trust Advanced Course and Scientific Conferences programme and the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre.
In addition to its peaceful location the campus offers excellent facilities including a state of the art data centre, gym, two cafes, a nursery, dining facilities, a cycle to work scheme, car sharing and free campus buses from various locations around Cambridge.
Learning, development and networking are other important aspects of life on campus. There are a range of scientific seminars with our own and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops.
Our benefits package includes 25 days annual leave (increasing 1 day for every year’s service to a maximum of 30 days), premier private healthcare and a defined benefits pension scheme.
Closing date: 19th December 2014
