Postdoctoral Researcher in Evolutionary Fish Ecology
UEF - University of Eastern Finland - Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences
Joensuu, Finland
We announce a two-year post doc position in the project “Evolutionary restoration of trout populations impacted by human-induced selection”, funded by the Academy of Finland. The project aims to reveal the genetic basis of vulnerability to angling and pace-of-life syndromes especially with respect to migration behaviour in endangered brown trout through artificial breeding, behavioural experiments and RAD-sequencing. The project involves two PhD students.
Candidates are expected to have a strong background in evolutionary and behavioural ecology or in bioinformatics and genetics. At minimum basic knowledge of fishing and hatchery induced evolution is a necessity. The focus area (genomics or conservation-oriented evolutionary ecology) will be tailored for the chosen person, and there is flexibility to modify the research plan according to personal interests. The work will require a 1-3 month stay in Professor Robert Arlinghaus’ lab at Humboldt University of Berlin/Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology in 2017. Genetic work is conducted mainly at the University of Turku, and experimental work takes place at the Kainuu Fisheries Research station in Paltamo, located 270 km north from Joensuu.
A person to be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher shall hold a suitable doctoral degree. Positions of postdoctoral researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF Administrative Regulations 30 §).
The person to be appointed to the Postdoctoral Researcher Position is required to hold a doctoral degree, which may not have been completed more than five years ago at the time of accepting the position. In this context, the 5 years refer to a net period of time, which does not include maternity leaves, parental leaves, or military service, etc.
The languages of instruction at the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences are Finnish and English.
We encourage applications from highly motivated, mobile international candidates with demonstrated publishing skills and interest on evolutionary genetics, animal personality research and fishing/hatchery-induced evolution. We expect the successful candidate to be fluent in English. The chosen person must be able to participate in teaching courses relating to evolutionary ecology, genetics or fish ecology. The teaching takes at maximum 5-10% of the annual 1600 hour working time.
