Post-doctoral Fellowship in Meta-analysis in Perinatology at McMaster University

Recent new research funds from a Canada Research Chair position and a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) grant have become available for a post-doctoral position at McMaster University in the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology /Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact (formerly Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics), to lead perinatal meta-analyses including advanced techniques in meta-analysis and network meta-analysis to improve the health of women and infants.

The successful candidate will be co-supervised in a vibrant, collaborative environment by Dr. Sarah McDonald, holder of the prestigious Canada Research Chair, is a perinatal clinical epidemiologist and high risk obstetrician and Dr. Joseph Beyene, an academic biostatistician who was Co-Convenor of the Cochrane Statistical Methods Group for 15 years.  Work will involve application of advanced meta-analytic methods including both conventional as well as network meta-analysis, examining both maternal and infant outcomes. Opportunities include collaborations with teams in other departments, centres, provinces and internationally.   McMaster University, home to the Cochrane Canada Centre and the GRADE approach, is a world-leader in Knowledge Synthesis.

We are seeking highly motivated applicants who have a Ph.D. in (Bio)Statistics, Clinical Epidemiology, or a very closely-related field. Applicants who hold an MD will not be able to be considered. A PhD is mandatory. The applicant should be enthusiastic and motivated. Experience in research in medicine, particularly in obstetrics, neonatology or perinatology would be an asset. Being able to work as part of a team as well as independently with direction are important skills.

The primary responsibilities of this position involve designing and carrying out cohort studies and complimentary meta-analyses and network meta-analyses in perinatology, analyzing data using statistical packages, such as R, SAS and WinBUGS/JAGS, co-authoring and submitting manuscripts. Other opportunities will include gaining experience with writing research grants and the supervision of students. The position will be tailored to the applicant’s career goals.

The appointment will be for 1-3 years dependent on the candidate’s goals, qualifications, fit and productivity. Salary is commensurate with qualifications. McMaster University is recognized and internationally ranked research and educational institution, and the Dept of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact is particularly renowned in meta-analysis, and has a vibrant series of rounds and other educational opportunities.
