We are interested in manipulating ribosome-mediated translation machinery (tRNA and EF-Tu) to enhance the capabilities of a protein (such as stability, protease-resistance, solubility, etc.). To accomplish this aim, the Postdoc will be tasked with utilizing their expertise in synthetic biology and microbial assays to engineer components of the protein translation system (in particular, EF-Tu) to incorporate unnatural amino acids into protein (30%). The Postdoc will design mutant libraries for tRNA, EF-Tu and ribosome analyses. This will include sequence analysis and evolutionary analysis for signs of selection acting on the sequences (20%). The postdoc will also conduct assays to determine optimal tRNA/EF-Tu pairs capable of delivering particular unnatural amino acids (30%).
In addition to research, this position will offer career training opportunities to expand the Postdoc’s development in a creative and interactive environment. The Postdoc will be expected to serve as a mentor to graduate and undergraduate students, publish abstracts and manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, as well as present at local, national, and international venues (20%).
Expertise in synthetic biology and microbial assays (synthetic gene/construct design, genetic manipulation, protein production and characterization, cellular-based assays, etc.)
Experience with bacterial cell culture
Highly skilled in enzyme engineering and sequence analysis
Strong preference in experience utilizing molecular and cellular assays to observe the downstream effects of integrating unnatural amino acids into proteins
Proven ability to work independently and in collaborative team environments
