Applications are invited for a position as professor in immunology and virology in aquaculture fish. The professorship is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua), the unit for Aquatic Animal Health located in Lyngby and Hirtshals.
The professor’s research field includes:
immunology and virology/microbiology with emphasis on host-pathogen interactions,
characterization of innate and adaptive protective mechanisms of the animal host as well as pathogen virulence parameters,
disease prophylaxis in cultured fish, specifically vaccinations,
use of infection models in fish for testing and development of prophylactic and therapeutic concepts based on biotechnology,
occurrence and propagation infectious diseases in farmed fish considering interactive effects of, aquaculture system design, water quality, feed and genetic resistance,
interactions of farmed and wild fish stocks.
Responsibilities and tasks
The professor is expected to advance science, innovation, advice and education in relation to fish diseases and their prevention with specific focus on farmed fish, including:
taking leadership in planning, implementing and running of international and national multidisciplinary research and innovation projects,
promoting implementation and application of research results and innovation in fish aquaculture, specifically to improve disease protection mechanisms including vaccinations, reducing infection vectors and optimising environmental rearing and feeding conditions on diseases,
improving the capacity of the institute for giving advice to national and international authorities and policy makers, industry and other stakeholders,
training and supervising PhD students and postdocs as well as contributing to teaching at MSc and PhD levels.
Activities should be embedded in and complementing the aquaculture research of the Institute, and be conducted with other research units of the Institute, as well as other departments at the University and relevant research groups in primarily Europe and North America, as well as management authorities, the aquaculture industry, and other stakeholders.
The successful candidate is expected to be involved in teaching activities related primarily to MSc and PhD students. For international candidates, DTU offers Danish language courses with the purpose of being able to teach in Danish within the first two-three years.
Qualifications
The position is intended for a candidate with a track record of:
internationally acknowledged research in fish immunology and virology,
innovative collaborative projects with other scientific disciplines and the aquaculture industry,
giving advice on fish diseases and their prevention to public authorities, international advisory bodies, industry, and other stakeholders.
Employment implies original research at the highest international level within listed research themes and an outstanding record in research leadership, including:
visionary strategic development of the research area,
planning, implementing, running and reporting innovative research projects,
integrating research and innovation into the institutes work portfolio, specifically aquaculture related activities,
implementing results in commercial aquaculture production,
coordinating input and contributing to work of national and international advisory groups,
supervision of PhD students and postdocs and contribution to teaching at MSc and PhD levels.
