Research Associate in Urban Mobility

University of Oxford - School of Geography and the Environment

Location:Oxford

Salary:£31,604 to £38,833 p.a. (Grade 7)

Hours:Full Time

Contract Type:Fixed-Term/Contract

Placed on:6th July 2018

Closes:10th August 2018

Job Ref:135689

We are seeking a Research Associate to join an international cohort of postdoctoral scholars within the PEAK Urban project, which is a 4-year, international, multidisciplinary Global Challenge Research Fund programme.

You will work on a project focused on the effects of transport infrastructure that are widely considered to be ‘pro-poor’ (e.g. bus rapid transit, cable cars) on the everyday lives of vulnerable social groups in the city, such as the elderly, the disabled, and single women in poor and/or informal neighbourhoods. The project will work with the concept of accessibility and reconceptualise this to reflect local perceptions and experiences of constraints on mobility and everyday practices. The ambition is to develop a knowledge co-production approach to research and modelling in which a small group of citizens will be trained as co-researchers who will play a prominent role in data collection, taking decisions in the modelling process, and interpretation of results.

The main duties are to develop theoretically informed, empirical grounded research on the effects of pro-poor urban transport infrastructure on the everyday lives of people in vulnerable groups in the population of one or more Latin American cities.

The successful candidate must have a PhD or have a PhD submitted (at time of job interview) in transport studies, geography, urban studies, or related fields. You will have in-depth understanding of different theoretical approaches to the study of the accessibility, everyday mobilities, and everyday life in the city. You must have expertise in participatory research in which local community members are involved as co-researchers. A good research and publication record, judged by the candidate’s career stage is essential.

This position is available from 1 October 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post is fixed-term for 24 months although continuation will be subject to a whole programme performance review by the funders at 1 year.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application. Informal inquiries can be directed towards Dr Tim Schwanen: tim.schwanen@ouce.ox.ac.uk.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 10 August 2018, and interviews are likely to be held in late August 2018.
