Post Doc in Management of Dairy Cows
SLU - Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
Uppsala, Sweden
The Department carries out basic and applied research on the chemical composition, hygienic quality, nutritive value and usage of feedstuffs, animal metabolism and nutrient utilisation and housing and management. The goal is to create a sustainable and profitable production with good animal care that provides high quality food. The Department works with farm species as well as sport and pet animals.
The research is often interdisciplinary and carried out in co-operation with other Departments, both in Sweden and abroad. Research in sustainable livestock systems in the tropics is an important part of the activities at the Department.
At our Department, we educate at undergraduate level, advanced level and research level. Our teaching encompass a broad competence area from nutrient metabolism and feed science to management and ethology.
Duties:
The position involves conducting and developing research within the subject area. The two main research projects the post-doc will be involved in are 1) “New management protocols for management of dairy cows and their calves in early lactation” and 2) “Possibilities to use LED light for lactating dairy cows”. The work will require deep knowledge and interest in physiology and management with focus on metabolism, lactation, reproduction and effects of light on lactating cows. Other aspects that will be included are animal activity, behaviour and welfare and market aspects on dairy products, including consumer attitudes. We are looking for a candidate with interest in management of both cows and calves. The research will be carried out both in the university dairy herd and at commercial farms and will include periods of intensive work outside office hours. In addition to the research you will participate in supervising master theses, and teach students at basic and advanced level.
Qualifications:
Eligible for employment are candidates with a master degree in animal science, veterinary medicine or biology and a PhD degree in animal science or veterinary medicine with focus on physiology and animal management with documented competence on management of lactating production animals. You must have experience of experimental planning and of managing multidisciplinary research projects. It is also important that you have hands-on experience of handling large production animals. Previous work that includes both physiology and activity or behaviour measures as well as practical work in research herds are merits for the position.
You should have good oral and written skills in English language and be prepared to use Swedish for the experimental work in the research barn and in contacts with commercial farms. You also need to be able to accommodate uneven work hours during intense experimental periods.
