Post-Doctoral Researcher in Theoretical Physics
National University of Ireland Maynooth - Department of Theoretical Physics
Maynooth, Ireland
The Role
Applications are invited for a 3-year Post-Doctoral research position in theoretical physics, in the Department of Theoretical Physics, Maynooth University, Ireland.
The successful applicant will be joining the research group led by Dr. Joost Slingerland, and the research will focus on topologically ordered phases of condensed matter systems, as well as their applications to quantum information processing. The position has been funded by Science Foundation Ireland and is available immediately.
Principal Duties:
The successful applicant will perform research in theoretical physics, playing a major role in the project "Topological Order, Entanglement and Quantum Information Processing", funded through SFI Investigator Award 16/IA/4524. The work will proceed in collaboration with Dr. Slingerland and his team. The team funded by the award consists of the successful applicant, another postdoctoral researcher and a Ph.D. Student. In addition there will be interactions with other members of Dr. Slingerland's research group and collaborators, both within and outside the University.
The successful candidate will work both independently, developing their personal research profile, and in collaboration with the team. It is foreseen that in addition to research, the successful candidate may take on light teaching or mentoring duties, as part of their professional development. They should also contribute to the active scientific culture within the department and take an important role in the dissemination of the research results.
Administrative duties will include contributing to the financial and progress reports for the project and we also hope to enable the candidate to take on light teaching duties as part of their professional development.
The ideal candidate will have:
Mandatory:
A Ph.D. in theoretical physics, mathematics or a related subject;
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Desirable:
Research experience in the physics of topologically ordered systems;
Research experience in quantum information and computation;
Expertise in topological field theory/tensor categories/quantum groups/anyon models and local models for these structures;
Experience with numerical analysis of quantum matter, for example using exact diagonalization, MPS methods, or machine learning techniques.
