Postdoctoral Research Fellow

NATURE OF WORK

The Lifecourse Epidemiology of Adiposity and Diabetes (LEAD) Center of the Colorado School of Public Health has an opening for a full-time (1.0 FTE) Post-doctoral Research Fellow position. An outstanding candidate is sought for the development and implementation of a postdoctoral project, and preparation and publication of research study papers. The fellow will also be responsible for mentoring undergraduate and graduate students as those opportunities arise.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Postdoctoral Research Project: The fellow would join a team of epidemiologists, statisticians and exposure scientists conducting research on the role of environmental exposures (broadly defined) in early life on child health and development, with a specific focus on the origins of obesity and metabolic disease. The primary data resource supporting these investigations is the Healthy Start study, an ongoing cohort study that enrolled women during pregnancy, and continues to follow their school-age children to ascertain health outcomes.

Prenatal and early postnatal exposures of interest include traffic-related air pollution, persistent and non-persistent environmental chemical exposures, as well as lifestyle and nutritional factors. A molecular epidemiology approach is encouraged, using biological samples to measure clinical and mechanistic intermediates including cardio-metabolic, inflammatory, metabolomic and epigenetic markers. Outcomes of interest include infant and child body weight, adiposity, growth trajectories, glucose/insulin, lipid profiles, cardiovascular function, liver fat content, as well as positive health indicators. The overall goal of this research is to improve child health by identifying modifiable factors in the early life environment that are linked to adverse health outcomes.

The Healthy Start cohort is part of the NIH Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program (www.nih.gov/echo) and within this national consortium, investigators may propose multi-cohort analyses for research questions that require larger sample sizes, geographic diversity, or unique populations/samples.

Manuscript Preparation, Analysis, and Publication:

The fellow is expected to focus his or her efforts on a well-defined research project. The fellow will be responsible for manuscript preparation, analysis, and publication of data generated from the postdoctoral research project. In addition to these papers, the trainee will assist Drs. Dana Dabelea, Anne Starling, Wei Perng and collaborators with literature review, statistical analysis, and manuscript development of additional papers.

Grant Writing:

The fellow will assist the Director in developing new grant ideas and applications for internal and external grants involving cohorts within the LEAD Center.

Other Responsibilities:

The fellow will assist with general statistical needs of the LEAD Director and study collaborators including consulting on appropriate analytical strategies, implementation of analyses in trainee’s choice of statistical packages, interpretation of results, and assisting with writing analysis and results sections of grants and manuscripts. Mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students may be incorporated into the trainee’s responsibilities as those opportunities become available.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position reports directly to Anne Starling, PhD and will receive additional mentoring by Dana Dabelea, MD, PhD and Wei Perng, PhD.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

The fellow will be responsible for supervision of undergraduate and graduate students who work directly with him or her on projects within the LEAD Center.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Coding and analytical proficiency in SAS, R, or STATA

Knowledge of lifecourse epidemiology

Knowledge of health effects of environmental exposures

Knowledge of metabolic diseases including obesity and diabetes

Ability to work independently with limited supervision

Excellent communication and organizational skills

Salary and Benefits:

The starting salary for this position has been established at $48,500. Salary is commensurate with skills and experience. This salary meets the NIH FY19 guidelines for a post-doctoral fellow with 0 years of experience. The University of Colorado offers a full benefits package. PhD in a health sciences or public health field

Proficiency in statistical analyses using SAS, R, or STATA
