UTS has world-renowned researchers in yield and climate forecasting, remote sensing, and holistic farm management. We are partnering with The Yield, an Internet of Things (IoT) agriculture technology company. The Yield aims to be a global leader in intelligent solutions in the food industry. It develops IoT, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence solutions in Australia. They have a highly-focused team that brings together world-leading agriculturists, scientists and technologists.

UTS and The Yield are looking for a postdoctoral scientist who is passionate about solving real world problems and providing agricultural insights through advanced analytics. The position is part of a collaboration funded by the Food Agility Cooperative Research Centre with the aim of predicting agricultural outcomes using cutting-edge IoT, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence technologies.

About the role

Working collaboratively with our industry partner you will work with data sets ranging from multiyear climate data, observation data collected by on-farm sensors, grower inputs, and agricultural models. You will work within a multi-disciplinary team to create previously unknown insights, model and codify inherent knowledge, and provide local on farm predictions using cutting edge methods and techniques.

This is an opportunity for a researcher with an academic background to gain industry experience by being embedded within UTS’s Environmental Science discipline and The Yield’s data science and engineering teams.

About you

You have a sound understanding of machine learning and AI and coding prowess in a range of languages. A strong communicator and problem solver, you have empathy for end-users and a creative ability to apply data and data relationships across multiple sources and domains to help solve real problems for growers and food producers.

To be successful in securing the role, you will also have:

o A PhD with a strong quantitative focus

o A track record of developing models using machine learning or AI to achieve outcomes in areas such as environmental, climatic, geospatial, marine or agriculture modelling

o Solid working knowledge of querying and manipulating datasets with exposure to at least one industrial strength database

o Experience in manipulating, handling and extracting data from large structured and unstructured data sets including one or more of the following: time series data, predictive atmospheric models, weather or climate data, satellite imagery, and geospatial data

o Capacity to identify new opportunities and build collaborative relationships within UTS and The Yield as well as externally.

Remuneration & Benefits

Base Salary Range: $87,816 – $94,263 pa (Academic Level A) or $102,952 to $121,849 pa (Academic Level B)

This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position isfull timeand appointment will be made on a fixed termbasis for 2 years.
