The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at NC State University is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in support of the project “Cultural landscapes climate change vulnerability assessments at Mid-Atlantic battlefield park units.”

The postdoctoral research scholar will provide archaeological expertise in the effort to create comprehensive GIS databases for three National Parks (Gettysburg, Valley Forge, and Richmond)

that synthesize existing Cultural Resources data and metadata for archeology, ethnography, historic structures, and cultural landscapes.

This is a 3-year, full-time position, renewed annually, subject to funding continuation and satisfactory performance.

The Postdoctoral Research Scholar’s primary responsibilities will be to assemble geospatial and tabular data provided by NPS, created by project participants, and gathered from additional relevant sources into a database that meets project goals and NPS criteria.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Communicate with project members in the Colleges of Humanities and Social Sciences, Natural Resources, and Design at NC State as well as colleagues at the National Parks Service (NPS) and at Richmond National Battlefield Park (VA), Gettysburg National Military Park (PA), and Valley Forge National Historical Park (PA) to gather evidence and work with park staff.

Collaborate with NPS staff to assure access to relevant data and evaluate these data for duplicates, missing records, and other inconsistencies.

Consult park staff on the inclusion of all data in a list of relevant cultural, archaeological, and other historical features.

Identify data gaps between tabular and geospatial datasets.

Travel to NPS sites as needed to collect geospatial data and validate existing geospatial data.

Collaborate with NPS staff to develop, document, and automate (when possible) a database integration workflow that incorporates existing and newly collected data across cultural resources, archaeology, and historical structures.

Develop metadata that accompanies the final databases.

Work independently to meet project goals.

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 8am-5pm (Flexible)

Experience with relational database management; cultural resources compliance

practices such as Section 106/110; collaboration with federal agencies; historical archaerology.
