Arctic Research Centre (ARC), Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University invites applications for two 2-year postdoctoral fellowships from 1 February 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.

About ARC
ARC is an interdisciplinary research centre at Aarhus University (see http://arctic.au.dk). ARC is funded by AU, as well as Faculty of Science & Technology (AU) and Faculty of Health (AU) for an initial period of five years. Furthermore, ARC is part of the Arctic Science Partnership between Aarhus University, Greenland Institute for Natural Resources and University of Manitoba, Canada (see http://asp-net.org). ARC seeks to answer seven key questions:

  1. What controls change in i) snow, sea ice area extent and thickness? ii) the glacier-sea ice ocean interactions? iii) the permafrost thaw and the associated atmosphere-land interactions?
  2. What controls the marine and atmospheric transport of pollutants to the Arctic?
  3. How can proxies of palaeoclimate/ecology inform us of changes in ocean current, wind systems, precipitation, future Arctic climates and their ecological consequences?
  4. What are the consequences of these changes (1-2) for i) ecosystem ecology, structure and function? and ii) chemical contaminants affecting ecosystems and human exposure?
  5. What are the impacts of the transition and environmental changes on the Arctic population’s lifestyle and changes in disease patterns?
  6. What will be the combined effects of natural and anthropogenic forcing on ecosystems and their services?
  7. What are the feedbacks between the Arctic and Earth climate system?

Research area and project description
We advertise the two postdoc positions broadly within the natural science themes, i.e., questions 1-4; 6-7 above, wishing to select young scientists who will contribute with a process-oriented approach to the study of climate change drivers and effects, either within or across media (atmosphere, terrestrial, limnic, marine systems).

The postdocs will be active members of an interdisciplinary team conducting field campaigns in West and East Greenland, and major parts of the laboratory work will be carried out at the Greenland Institute for Natural Resource in Nuuk.

Qualifications
The successful applicant must have obtained a PhD degree or have submitted their PhD thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline in the field of biology, chemistry, oceanography, geography, geology or related disciplines. The candidate is expected to organize and conduct field campaigns independently within a framework of a large international team, to have experience working quantitatively in the field as well as experimentally in the laboratory. Good team-working and communication skills are necessary.

The place of work is Arctic Research Centre, Dept. of Bioscience, Aarhus University, Building 1110, C.F. Møllers Allé 8, DK-8000 Aarhus C.
