Description
The Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) is an international, interdisciplinary centre of excellence located in Potsdam, devoted to promoting science and research for global sustainability, particularly in the areas of climate change, the earth system and the develop-ment of new technologies. The Earth, Energy and Environment - E3 Cluster - under the responsibility of the IASS Scientific Director Nobel Laureate Prof. Carlo Rubbia, is exploring new scientific and technologi-cal approaches to transform the current energy technologies, based mainly on the combustion of fossil fuels, into sustainable and climate-friendly solutions. The E3 Cluster invites applications from suitable candidates for Postdoctoral Research Fellow positions in the following research project: Combustion of Methane without CO2 emissions. The development of processes able to exploit hydrocarbons without greenhouse gas emissions is a must in order to avoid environmental side effects that could be produced by the burning of the available fossil fuel resources. One of the alternatives that are under study to achieve this goal is the conversion of Methane by its splitting into Hydrogen and Carbon. A collaborative project has been started between IASS and KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) for the development of methane cracking exploiting liquid metal technology. The project has been approved and financed with approximately 2 millions of Euro funding and it has an expected lifetime of 30 months. To advance in the technological development of Methane pyrolysis, both postdoctoral and senior fellow positions are opened: Required skills: • Experience in fluid-mechanics simulation and/or stress analysis, including CFD and finite element methods. • Experience in simulation of two-phase flow fluid-mechanics. • Experience in stress analysis. • Background in the development of chemical processes. • Knowledge of life cycle analysis methods. • Socio-economic analysis for new technological processes Ideal candidates will have a background in chemical, mechanical, process engineering or in a similarly relevant discipline and show the ability to solve problems in a challenging research environment and excellent interpersonal communication skills both in written and spoken English in order to interact with partners Institutes and/or laboratories. Fellowships will have a duration of up to 2 years. Applications (including curriculum vitae, list of publications and two letters of reference) should be sent not later than Friday 20th January 2013 via e-mail to: Prof. Alberto Abánades IASS, Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V.
