Two postdoctoral positions

Call for applications

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Jyväskylä, will hire two postdoctoral researchers. We invite prospective candidates to apply for these positions, which will involve research in one or more of the following areas:
1.Geometric analysis
2.Inverse problems in geometry
3.Inverse problems in partial differential equations
4.Nonlinear partial differential equations

Prospective postdoctoral researchers are expected to have a PhD degree or equivalent. Persons graduating in the near future are also encouraged to apply.

The application with the following documents should be submitted electronically to Mikko Salo (mikko.j.salo@jyu.fi). The deadline for applications is January 31, 2013.
Cover letter indicating which research area(s) are addressed
Short curriculum vitae, including a list of publications
Scanned copies of relevant diplomas and transcripts of academic records. Translations of these documents in English may also be attached.

The salary for postdoctoral researchers will be placed on level 5 (typical monthly salary 3400 euros) of the job demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the Salary System for Finnish Universities. See here for tax information. The positions are research oriented and have low teaching load, and they include funding for travel. The duration of the positions is two years with a possible extension for a third year. One year appointments are also possible.

The starting time for the positions is September 1, 2013 or earlier, and the style and contribution of the projects can be adjusted somewhat to match the applicants’ strengths. Prof. Mikko Salo and Prof. Xiao Zhong will act as coordinators for the projects.

Description of research environment

The postdoctoral positions will be placed at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Jyväskylä, a leading unit in mathematical sciences in Finland. The department staff numbers over 80, with 12 professors. The research carried out at the department is of the highest international standard. The department houses one Academy Professor and one Finland Distinguished Professor (FiDiPro), and it participates in the Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems Research appointed by the Academy of Finland. The department also has one research project funded by the European Research Council (ERC). The major lines of research are geometric analysis, geometric measure theory, inverse problems, nonlinear partial differential equations, statistics, and stochastics. More information may be found on the webpages of the research groups (see links below).

The University of Jyväskylä is a nationally and internationally significant research university and an expert on education that focuses on human and natural sciences. It is ranked 303rd by the QS World University Rankings, placing it among the best 2.5 percent of world universities. The University has 15000 degree students, who together with the adult education students constitute a total of 40000 students coming from some 100 countries. The number of staff is 2600, and the annual budget is approximately 200 million euro. Founded in 1863, the University of Jyväskylä combines its educational tradition with modern internationality and wants to cultivate strong basic sciences, foster interdisciplinary cooperation and fruitful interaction between research and education, and make the competence created therein available to society as a whole.
