The Max Planck Institute for Ornithology is an internationally renowned research institution working in the fields of Behavioural Neurobiology, Behavioural Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Eco-Immunology and Migration. At two locations, more than 200 employees work in three departments and six research groups. Funded by a Starting Grant of the European Research Council (ERC), the Sensory Ecology Group of the Max-Planck Institute for Ornithology, Seewiesen (close to Starnberg) is seeking

1 post-doctoral researcher in full-time

to study the sensory and cognitive ecology of species interactions in bat communities.

Your tasks:
The main aim of this project is to study heterospecific recognition in wild free-flying bat communities using flight path tracking and analysis methods. We look for an excellent colleague to establish a tracking system, partially using existing modules, and to conduct the experimental research at our field station in Bulgaria. Tasks include the implementation of algorithms for spatial positioning of echolocating bats based on call recordings, playback studies in the field, and the analysis of the flight and acoustic behavior of bats.

Our requirements:
The successful candidate will be highly motivated and productive, with a proven record of performing top quality research, and work well both within a team and independently. Based on a successfully completed study of science and PhD-equivalent qualifications, you are fluent in Matlab programming and experienced in bioacoustics, sound processing and digital signal analysis. Experience in three-dimensional path analysis and playback (field) experiments would be highly beneficial. You should be interested in animal interactions, bioacoustics and bat biology, enjoy nature, the development and application of technical scientific equipment, and both field- and computer-based research.

You can expect an interesting and varied activity in a highly motivated team and an international and outstanding scientific environment. Payment and benefits are according to the German TVöD depending on personal qualifications. There will be further social benefits according to the provision of the public sector.

The current position is available for 1 year, but no longer than including February 2014 and will be hosted by Dr. Holger R. Goerlitz. The position will ideally start as soon as possible; screening of applications will therefore begin immediately until the position is filled.

In an effort to employ more people with disabilities, the Max-Planck-Society specifically encourages people with disabilities to apply for the position. To increase the employment of women in areas where they are under-represented, the Max-Planck-Society also encourages women to apply for this position.
